Aardvark

The aardvark is an African mammal with a tapering pig-like snout, donkey-like ears, a strong tail and sharp claws. Aardvark means 'earth-pig' in Dutch. It feeds on termites which it obtains by digging into termite nests and eating them using its long sticky tongue. Aardvarks are around 2 meters long.

Aard-Wolf

The Aard-Wolf is a small mammal from southern and eastern Africa. It is related to the hyena. Aard-Wolf means 'earth-wolf' in Dutch. It eats ants and other insects.

Agouti

The agouti is a close relative of the paca, and is about the size of a rabbit but has no tail. It eats leaves and fruit.

Alligator - American

alligator The American alligator lives in the south east USA. Alligators live on the banks of rivers and in the water. They can stay submerged for a surprisingly long time.

Alligator - Chinese

The Chinese alligator lives in the Yangtse River basin. They are smaller than American alligators.

Alpaca

alpacas The alpaca is closely related to the llama but is smaller. The cloth 'alpaca' is woven from its long fleece.

Anteater - Giant

giant anteater The giant anteater is about 2.4 meters long. It makes use of its funnel-shaped head and long sticky tongue to capture and eat ants and termites.

Antelope

antelopes Antelopes include the kudu, nyala, eland, duiker and waterbuck. They come in various sizes. Antelopes are herbivorous animals that are able to live in a wide variety of conditions.

Armadillo

The Armadillo is instantly recognizable because of its jointed bands of bony armour. At the sign of danger an armadillo will roll themselves into a ball or bury themselves in earth until the danger has passed. They feed on insects, eggs, small snakes and rodents.

Ass

The ass is a member of the horse family. They are smaller than the horse and have long ears, a short mane and they 'bray' instead of 'neigh'.
